Project Overview
Technique Roofing was honored to return to Family Baptist Church in Toledo, OH—a historic building we originally roofed in the late 1990s. After decades of dependable service, the roof had begun to show signs of age. Rather than pursuing a costly full replacement, church leadership reached out to us for a more strategic, preventative solution.
Project Challenge
This project came with a unique set of structural and historical constraints:
- The church’s historic status meant the exterior appearance could not be altered—no new edge metal or visible modifications.
- The roof included two separate sections, both aging and in need of attention.
- Several prior wall repairs had been made, complicating attachment points.
- The roof had staggered wall lines and architectural details that required precision wrapping and membrane integration.
- A full tear-off would have required upgrading insulation to R-25, significantly increasing costs.
Solution: Duro-Last® Duro-Shield Silicone Roof Coating
Rather than a complete replacement, we recommended Duro-Shield silicone coating from Duro-Last—a system we’ve installed successfully on many commercial and institutional buildings. This coating solution allowed us to:
- Avoid altering the building’s historical appearance
- Preserve the existing structure while restoring waterproofing performance
- Minimize cost and disruption to the congregation’s ongoing operations
- Extend the life of the roof significantly without a full tear-off
What We Did
- Inspection & Evaluation: Assessed both roof sections and determined that the insulation was still largely intact, with only minor compression in ponding areas.
- Targeted Insulation Repairs: We opened and repaired the few compromised areas by replacing insulation and improving drainage slopes.
- Surface Preparation: Cleaned and prepped the roof membrane for silicone application, including detail work around staggered and irregular walls.
- Application of Silicone Coating: Applied Duro-Shield Silicone coating across the entire surface, ensuring full coverage, improved reflectivity, and weatherproof performance.
- Drainage Optimization: Enhanced drainage in key low points to prevent ponding, ensuring long-term adhesion and durability of the silicone system.
Project Outcome
The result was a cost-effective, low-impact roofing solution that preserved the historical integrity of the church while restoring the building’s waterproofing. Thanks to this proactive approach, Family Baptist Church can now confidently move forward with other renovation projects—like repairing ceilings previously damaged by leaks—knowing their roof is fully protected.
